Frequently asked questions

What is Channel One Connection?
Channel One Connection (C1C) is a service of the Channel One Network, which programs, schedules and airs to Channel One schools an average of 100 minutes of commercial-free educational programming per day during the school year from September to May. The more than 250 total hours of programming makes C1C the largest source of instructional video programming for secondary schools in the country. The goal of C1C is to bring to the Channel One Network schools the best and most applicable educational materials in video format.

How are programs chosen?
C1C works with a number of reputable educational video distribution companies in order to find the best available programming on a particular topic. C1C also considers original programs that have been underwritten and sponsored by organizations and companies. A wide range of curriculum topics are covered on C1C each year which include, and are broadcast according to, the following:

  • Mondays are dedicated to Social Studies programming: Civics, Economics, Geography, U.S. History, World History.
  • Tuesdays are for Language and Arts programming.
  • Wednesdays cover Math, Science and Technology topics.
  • Thursdays cover Health and Guidance issues as well as School-to-Work topics.
  • Fridays are for Channel One News in Review, a commercial-free rebroadcast of the previous week's Channel One News programs.

Programs that fit into the C1C schedule are chosen for preview and reviewed and evaluated by the C1C Program Manager. Acceptable programs are then licensed for closed-circuit satellite feed and placed into the C1C broadcast schedule.

Program rights:
Any program aired on C1C can be recorded and used by the schools for up to one year from the original air date. On the one-year anniversary of the airdate, the school must erase, record over or destroy the video tape.

To record C1C programs:
The C1C feed is sent via satellite in the early morning hours. To record this feed, simply place a rewound tape into the Channel One Connection VCR-- located beneath the Channel One News VCR in the head-end unit-- THE NIGHT BEFORE the program is scheduled to air.

For example, to record a program scheduled on Tuesday, May 8, place your tape in the C1C VCR before you leave on Monday, May 7th. Your VCR has been programmed to detect our satellite feed and record the program automatically. When you arrive in the morning, the program will be recorded and ready to view.

For ease of reference, please label your tapes clearly to include program name, original C1C airdate and/or the month and year in which your rights to this program expire. For ease of reference, each program is preceded by a slate that includes the following program information: feed date, title, length, intended grade levels, a corresponding dewey decimal number for shelving, curriculum codes to indicate content and a month/year to indicate when your usage rights for the program expire.

When a program is missed:
Our licensing agreements with program distributors are for broadcast only. As a commercial organization, we cannot duplicate and distribute the shows by any other means than closed circuit satellite feed. We, therefore, cannot send you a tape of the program that has been missed. You may, however, obtain it in the following ways:

  1. If you would like to obtain a copy of the other programs from another Channel One school, then by all means you are encouraged to do so. Some of our schools are setting up networks and providing dubs for one another when a program is missed. If you would like a list of local Channel One schools, please call (888) 241-6895, ext. 3 and we can provide you with that information.
  2. Lastly, you can contact the distributor directly to purchase the program. If you'd like to explore this avenue, call (888) 241-6895. Ext. 3 and, again, we will provide you with the necessary information.
